Antoine-Frédéric Gresnick (* 2. March 1755 in Liege , † 16th October 1799 in Paris ) was a Belgian composer of classical music .

Life

Gresnick's first musical training took place at the Lambertus Cathedral in Liège , before the cathedral chapter enabled him to study further at the "Liège Collège Darcis" in Rome. He then stayed in Naples, where he studied at the Conservatorio di Sant'Onofrio until 1779 , during which time he composed the Sinfonia con violini, strumenti di fiato, viola obligata e basso op.1 in 1772 . At the beginning of 1780 Gresnick was in Florence, where his opera L'Ortalano di sprito was performed at the Teatro dei Risoluti. In 1785 and 1786 he stayed in London with the then famous singer Gertrud Mara , where his opera Alceste was recorded with great success. From 1787 to 1789 he was director of the orchestra at the “Grand Théatre” in Lyon. In 1794 he settled in Paris, where 15 of his comic operas were performed. Due to the turmoil of the revolution and the closure of the Théâtre Louvois in 1797, the hoped-for success of his plays did not materialize.

His comic operas correspond to the style of André Grétry, who was also born in Liège . Although Gresnick initially received training in a church environment, he was best able to realize himself with his opéra comiques .
