African American Civil War Memorial
The African American Civil War Memorial on the corner to Vermont Avenue and U Street Corridor in Washington, DC commemorates the 209,145 African American soldiers and sailors on the part of the Union in the American Civil War fought. The memorial is located at the eastern entrance to the U St / African-Amer Civil War Memorial / Cardozo Metro Station.
The sculpture The Spirit of Freedom was created by Edward "Ed" Norton Hamilton, Jr. and completed in 1997. The memorial was designed by the African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation and Museum and transferred to the National Park Service on October 27, 2004 . A thematically related museum has existed since 1999. The original museum was two blocks west of the memorial in the historic U Street neighborhood. Since 2011, the museum has been located in the building directly across from the sculpture on 1925 Vermont Ave NW. Its mission is to make the history of the struggle for freedom better understood by visitors, researchers and descendants of the United States Colored Troops .
