The George Mason Memorial is a national memorial in West Potomac Park in Washington, DC , the capital of the United States .

It commemorates the work of George Mason , an important founding father of the United States who wrote the Virginia Declaration of Rights and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787 , but is often viewed as a "forgotten founder".

Mason, an anti-federalist, did not sign the United States Constitution because it did not abolish the slave trade and, in his opinion, did not adequately protect the individual citizen from the government. He was also known as the "hesitant politician", as was the title of Robert A. Rutland's biography.

The monument was approved by Law 101-358 on August 10, 1990. A site near the Jefferson Memorial was selected. The monument consists of a 22 m long wall with a larger than life statue showing Mason sitting cross-legged and a round water basin. The architect was Faye B. Harwell and the sculptor was Wendy M. Ross. The first groundbreaking was on October 18, 2000. The monument was inaugurated on April 9, 2002.

The George Mason Memorial is administered by the National Park Service .
