Located in the rotunda of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial is a giant seated statue of Benjamin Franklin . The 6 m high monument, created by James Earle Fraser from 1906 to 1911 , honors the writer, inventor and American statesman. The statue weighs 27 t and sits on an 83 t pedestal made of white Seravezza marble. The statue is the central part of the Memorial Hall. The Memorial Hall was designed by John T. Windrim after the model of the Pantheon and inaugurated in 1938.

On October 25, 1973, Congress designated the memorial a National Memorial . Unlike most National Memorials, the statue is not listed on the National Register of Historic Places . The memorial is an affiliated area of ​​the National Park Service and is assigned to the Independence National Historical Park by agreement of November 6, 1973 . In accordance with the provisions of the agreement, the institute owns and maintains the publicly accessible memorial. The National Park Service includes the monument in official publications and supports the institute in all endeavors in the interest of the monument.

The memorial was a location in the film Legacy of the Knights Templar .
