The Legacy of the Secret Book

Legacy of the Knights Templar is an American adventure film directed by Jon Turteltaub and released by the Walt Disney Company in 2004 . In 2007, the sequel The Legacy of the Secret Book was created .

action

Benjamin Gates, whose family was once entrusted with a key to the secret of the legendary treasure of the Knights Templar by Charles Carroll , the last surviving signer of the American Declaration of Independence , discovers that on the back of the American Declaration of Independence there must be a map showing the hiding place of the treasure that the American founding fathers were once hidden from the English. He and his friend Riley steal the original of the document from the National Archives in Washington in order to keep it safe from the greedy dodgy businessman Ian Howe. Then he can meet his reluctant father and the historian Dr. Convince Chase to help him find the treasure. An adventurous scavenger hunt through the sites of American revolutionary history begins . Not only do Gates and his friends have to forestall Ian and his gang, but they are always on the heels of FBI agent Sadusky, who is supposed to solve the theft of the United States' most important national document.

Finally, Gates and his friends manage to find the treasure. Gates and Dr. Chase become a couple and can enjoy their new wealth together with Riley. Although the three treasure hunters distribute the valuable finds to all famous museums, they keep 1% of the value of the riches for themselves, which makes them multimillionaires.

The FBI arrests Ian, exposing someone to be guilty of stealing the American Declaration of Independence.

Treasure Hunt Route

Benjamin Gates receives the line The secret lies with Charlotte from his grandfather (multiple interpretations are possible, and this is also intended: Charlotte knows the secret , the secret can be found with Charlotte , the secret rests with / on / with Charlotte ). This play on words, the correct solution of which gives a clue not to a person, but to a ship named Charlotte (thus the correct interpretation of the riddle The secret can be found on the Charlotte ), is the decisive hurdle for uncovering the entire puzzle. Thomas Gates, the grandfather's great-great-grandfather, had received this tip from Charles Carroll , the last living signer of the United States ' Declaration of Independence , when the latter was dying and had failed to meet Andrew Jackson and himself to communicate. The film repeatedly suggests that the Freemasons act as heirs to the Knights Templar and what influence they (should) have had on US politics at the time of the Declaration of Independence.

This leads Benjamin Gates to the wreck of the Charlotte , a ship that once belonged to the First Fleet and was lost near Newfoundland in November 1818 .

Independence Hall on the then 100 US dollar bill

In a powder keg in the hold of the ship, the treasure hunters stumble upon a meerschaum pipe which, by coloring it and then rolling it down on paper, reveals a verse that refers to the reverse of the Declaration of Independence through the reference to Timothy Matlack and 55 men (the signatories):

“The legend written, stained with signs, the key undiscovered in the silence , fifty-five in an iron pen, Mister Matlack can prove it.
Original version: The legend writ, the stain affected. The key in Silence, undetected. Fifty-five in iron pen, Mr. Matlack can't open. "

There you will find an Ottendorf encryption that was written on the back with secret ink . When this is deciphered in connection with the Silence Dogood letters to the editor, it shows the way to the "House of Pass and Stow", the Independence Hall with Liberty Bell , which can also be seen on the 100 US dollar bill. If you are now at 2:22 p.m., the time on the banknote, in the former place of the Liberty Bell, you can see the shadow of the bell tower falling on a wall. The brick where the shadow of the cross is on the top of the tower at this point is hollow and reveals to Gates a pair of bifocals made by Benjamin Franklin.

Secret rooms below Trinity Church, photo from the film set

If you look at the back of the Declaration of Independence, you can read Heere at the wall , which refers to the intersection of Wall Street and Broadway , where Trinity Church stands. A few floors below, the treasure hunters seem to be stuck in a dead end. Ian threatens to shoot Patrick Gates if Benjamin Gates doesn't reveal the next clue to him. In an emergency, Benjamin's father thinks up a wrong hint when he sees a lantern. This lantern stands for "the" of Paul Revere , who had instructed three of his patriots to hang them in the tower of the Old North Church in Boston. The rule one if by land, and two if by sea ("one for land, two for sea") was intended to indicate the route of the British troops before the battles of Lexington and Concord .

Of course, Benjamin Gates, his father and Abigail Chase know that there were two lanterns since the British stuck to the sea route. After all, they can send Ian Howe to Boston with the wrong tip, even if left alone at first they see no way out.

But then they find the treasure of the Knights Templar and a way out through the All-Seeing Eye and another clue to the Charlotte. There they call the FBI, which is still hunting them, and surrender. Gates is demanding impunity in exchange for delivering the Knights Templar's immeasurable treasure. He trusts the FBI officer all the more since he recognizes him as a Freemason from a brooch. But since someone has to be arrested for stealing the Declaration of Independence, Gates delivers him the criminal Ian Howe to the knife.

There are a few more references to US history in the film: The time on the banknote was one hour early because daylight saving time had been introduced in the US since the First World War .

Abigail Chase's password that Gates uses to enter the security area is Valley Forge . The book Benjamin Gates takes away from his father because he suspects money in it is Common Sense by Thomas Paine .

Gates managed to escape from the FBI at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum aboard the USS Intrepid (CV-11) .

What many German moviegoers missed due to the dubbing is the fact that Ian Howe and his comrades, the opponents of Gates in a scavenger hunt around the history of the American Revolution, are not Americans. His accomplices, played by David Dayan Fisher (such as Howe from Great Britain), Stewart Finlay-McLennan (Australia) and Oleg Taktarov (Russia), for example, are not native Americans either in the film or in real life.

Reviews

"Bruckheimer entertainment on the cutting edge of technology: all elements from the last successes of the producer are combined here."

- Los Angeles Daily News

"A somewhat lame infusion from Raiders of the Lost Ark ."

- New York Daily News

"Brisk plot crime, funny and educational"

"Routinely entertaining action film with appealing actors and a story that is not original, but solidly told, which has a surprisingly subversive downside due to the cheeky play with original American values."

background

The DVD for the film contains two cut scenes: The viewer sees how Gates' ancestor meets President Andrew Jackson after Carrol's death , who already knows about the clue with Charlotte and dismisses it as a myth. The scene under the church is also a lot longer.

In the alternate ending, Benjamin Gates and Chase consider the United States Constitution . When asked if she is sure that there isn't a card on the back, she replies that she has already tried it. Then Gates' father joins them and reports that in 1812 Andrew Jackson and Jean Laffite had sent a ship with a million dollar cargo of gold. His son mentions the Gulf of Mexico , Abigail Chase sighs and Riley asks if they could keep some of the treasure this time. In the introduction to this version, Turteltaub says that they did not use this version, otherwise the audience would have had the feeling that a sequel was being announced. In addition, the creators were dissatisfied that the scene takes place in a closed room. The key music from American Beauty is played during the scene . Nevertheless, a sequel was published at the end of 2007 under the title The Legacy of the Secret Book ( National Treasure - Book of Secrets ).

The DVD also contains an animatic of the story sequence at the beginning of the film and a making-of. The animatic is accompanied by a song from the soundtrack of Pirates of the Caribbean .

The budget for the film was $ 100 million; grossing US $ 173 million and totaling US $ 347 million worldwide, with weekend grossing of US $ 35 million.
