3 Ninjas - Kick Back

3 Ninjas is an American action - comedy from the year 1992 .

action

The three brothers Samuel, Jeffrey and Michael are trained to be ninjas by their grandfather in his hut in the forest . They love the training and the challenges that Mori Shintaro offers them every day. In addition to their mind, body, spirit and heart, they are initiated into ever more secrets of the ninja art, so that from now on they only address themselves by their ninja names. Samuel gets the name Rocky, Jeffrey Colt and Michael is only called Tum Tum because he always likes to eat. One day during their training, Snyder and a couple of ninjas appear and attack Granpa and his three grandchildren. They can win the fight, but Snyder still demands that his old teacher train his ninjas. Mori refuses, threatening Snyder that his three grandchildren are in danger unless he convinces his son-in-law, FBI agent Sam Douglas, not to pursue Snyder anymore. Because Snyder is a criminal who has just lost his rockets and money in an illegal arms deal, where he was just able to escape from Sam Douglas. Another rocket deal is pending in two days with Colonel Forek. Another disturbance would be a hindrance, which is why Snyder later instructs his assistant, Mr. Brown, to have the three children kidnapped by his nephew Fester and his two friends.

Before that, however, the three boys have to prove themselves at school. Some hooligans have previously stolen Emily's bike and are now provoking Colt and Rocky with a stolen basketball. According to the ninja code of never using violence against the weaker, they are not allowed to defend themselves with their martial arts, which is why they challenge the hooligans to a basketball duel and bet on Emily's bike. After a tough game that briefly looked like a defeat, the two can win back Emily's bike.

In the evening the three boys have a babysitter. After Fester missed several opportunities to kidnap the three, he manages to enter the house as a pizza delivery boy. With his two boys, he overpowers the babysitter, locks her in the closet, eats the pizza and tries to kidnap the boys. Only they use their ninja skills to defend themselves against the three gangsters with different methods. Colt, Rocky and Tum Tum can then free the babysitter, but they have no chance against Mr. Brown and his ninja henchmen. You are kidnapped and held in a cell on Snyder's ship. Granpa and the FBI then set out to free her. But the three once again use their ninja skills and free themselves, fighting their way through the ship and defeating lots of evil ninjas. Only when Snyder surrounds the three boys with gun violence does the situation seem hopeless. But Granpa appears and challenges Snyder to a fight, if he loses he will die, but if he wins the children can leave. Snyder agrees, and an even fight begins. After a few hard blows, however, it soon looks like Granpa is going to lose. Only with a trick he can win the fight. But Snyder is a bad loser, grabs a gun and wants to shoot everyone. Fortunately, at this very moment, Douglas and the FBI arrive and arrest them all.

reception

Stephen Holden of the New York Times criticized the film for not "deciding whether to be a comedy, fantasy or adventure film". The message conveyed by the film is "anything but reassuring." Otherwise, there is not much to be found in the film that is entertaining. The "only thing that is fun" is the permanent change of scene between the stunt double and Wong.

For "everyone under 10" it is a "lively, good-looking kiddie action comedy," said Kevin Thomas in the Los Angeles Times . He praised the portrayal of the “cunning and wonderful character actor” Victor Wong and said that the young audience would probably not notice “the unbelievable plot”.

The film borrows so much from other films that it ends up being "a bloody mess," said Hal Hinson of the Washington Post .

The lexicon of international films said: “The brilliantly choreographed ninja fights are usually bloodless, but the fairy-tale features are increasingly mixed with the stereotypical fighting rituals of the relevant Eastern. The child-friendly structure of the film turns into a dreary sword opus. "

The film opened in US theaters on August 7, 1992 and grossed just over $ 29 million.
