action

The orphaned Lucy Moderatz has lived alone in Chicago since her father died . Because of his illness, she once gave up her career plans and has since worked as a ticket seller at an elevated train station. The only bright spot in her lonely life is a beautiful stranger who buys a ticket at her counter every morning and nourishes her romantic dreams. On Christmas Day, Lucy witnessed her beloved being attacked and pushed onto the tracks. She boldly saves the life of the unconscious Peter Callaghan. When she tries to find out about Peter, who is in a coma , in the hospital , she is mistaken for his fiancée by a thoughtless remark and an overzealous nurse. In the exuberant greeting by Peter's chaotic, lovable extended family, Lucy's attempts to explain are lost.

Lucy enjoys the warmth of the Callagans' hearts and, after a moment's hesitation, spends Christmas with them. The next morning she meets Peter's brother Jack, who seems to be the only one who has doubts about Lucy's identity. But Lucy succeeds in refuting Jack's doubts through a piece of randomly learned information. When Jack brings Lucy home one evening, the two tell each other their secret dreams. Lucy really wants to go to Florence, while Jack would like to leave his parents' antiques shop and work as a furniture designer instead. A little later he actually makes it up to convey this wish to his father. Lucy's neighbors and an alleged pregnancy lead to further confusion with Jack, but finally the two realize independently of each other that they are in love with each other. Lucy is getting more and more into a quandary.

Peter wakes up from the coma and of course cannot remember Lucy, but this is explained by the family and doctors as an amnesia. Saul, an old family friend who has long known about Lucy's dilemma, offers to clear the matter up, but instead convinces Peter to actually propose to Lucy. The overwhelmed Lucy accepts this, but hopes for a sign from Jack, while Jack finds it difficult to come to terms with the fact that Lucy should become his sister-in-law, but does not want to push herself into his brother's relationship. At the wedding ceremony in the hospital chapel, Lucy can no longer remain silent and confesses to the amazed Callaghans that the engagement was a lie and that she is actually in love with Jack. Shortly afterwards, Peter's true partner storms the chapel together with her husband. In the ensuing chaos, Lucy withdraws without waiting for a reaction.

Some time later, on her last day at work, Lucy says goodbye to her colleague at the ticket office. She is determined to finally take control of her life again. As she waits for the coin for a ticket, a ring falls into the changer instead. Jack stands in front of her counter, framed by his family, and proposes to her on the spot. Lucy happily accepts. In the final scene, Lucy and Jack can be seen driving out of the train station on a train in wedding attire, while Lucy says in the voice-over that luckily life doesn't always go according to plan, that they traveled to Florence for their honeymoon and that they When Peter asked when she fell in love with Jack, I replied: While you were sleeping.
