There is war between the wizards on the side of Merlin and Morgana . Merlin has three apprentices : Veronica, Balthazar and Horvath. In 740 AD Merlin is fatally injured by Morgana when she steals a powerful spell from him, with which she can destroy the human world. To stop Morgana, Veronica takes in Morgana's soul. Only this successor can kill Morgana. Dave seems to be the wanted one and receives from Baltazar Merlin's magical dragon ring. Inadvertently, Dave lets Horvath escape the soul grail. During the subsequent fight, Balthazar and Horvath are locked in a vessel for ten years. The encounter with the magicians disturbs young Dave and burdens him for a long time.

Ten years later, Dave is a gifted, still introverted and shy physics student. In a disused subway station, he experiments with Tesla transformers that emit plasma flashes. At a lecture he rediscovers his childhood love, Becky. Escaping from the vessel, the warring Balthazar and Horvath are looking for Dave and the soul grail. Balthazar trains the reluctant Dave to be a magician. Horvath hires the show magician Drake Stone, who also belongs to Morgana's party. Horvath and Stone bring the Soul Grail under their control.

Horvath enchants Stone with the help of the parasite spell in order to take over its magical ring and magic power. He then frees the witch Abigail Williams from the Grail, who kidnaps Becky . After that, Horvath also acquired Abigail's magical abilities. When Balthazar and Dave want to bring back the Grail of Souls, Dave gives the Dragon Ring to Horvath to save Becky. With the Grail of Souls and three additional magical powers, Horvath disappears. Despite shock and confusion, Becky decides to help Dave in the foreseeable showdown with Morgana and Horvath. Since Dave no longer has a magic ring, he wants to use his knowledge of physics.

Horvath frees Morgana - in the physical form of Veronica - from the grail of souls. In a prepared pentacle of energy, Morgana begins raising an army of dead wizards to destroy the human world. Balthazar is defeated by Horvath in battle and can only barely be saved by Dave, who kills Horvath with plasma flashes from a converted car. Becky succeeds in breaking the pentagram of energy. Balthazar wants to sacrifice himself like Veronica once did in order to take over Morgana's soul. Veronica's body is released. Morgana escapes, attacks immediately and seriously injures Balthazar. Dave can put up a barrier against Morgana at the last minute. Without a magic ring, only the successor of Merlin has this power. Dave cannot overcome Morgana and hits a transformer station with his magic , from which cables then snake in the direction of the surrounding street lamps . Morgana admits Dave has great magical abilities, but thinks he is superior. Morgana is finally hit by strong plasma bolts from the direction of the lanterns; Dave can then destroy them.

Blake has died but is resuscitated by Dave. Balthazar and Veronica are finally reunited, and Dave and Becky also admit their love. Horvath's hat remains. After the credits, you can see the hat in Balthazar's shop. A figure reminiscent of Horvath takes off his hat and disappears.
