action
Russell Morgan Duritz lives in Los Angeles and is an image consultant. He is extremely successful in his job, but has no good relationship with his father Sam, his younger sister Janet or their children. In fact, he feels compassion for the elderly as a mortal sin. His only girlfriend who hasn't given up on him yet is his younger work colleague Amy, who is practically the opposite of him.
Shortly before his 40th birthday, Rusty, Russell's eight-year-old alter ego , appears. Little Rusty can't believe what will become of him one day: an unmarried, lonely yuppie - no pilot and without a dog named Chester! The dismissive Russell initially believes that he is suffering from hallucinations. He is then reminded of his difficult childhood, which he had tried to suppress all his life. He and Rusty are now trying to change something in his life.
A look back at the past reveals the tragedy in Russell's life: his mother with heart disease will soon die. The father tries in his fear not to upset her, to let Rusty grow up faster. This explains Russell's later twitching eyes and his distance to his father and the rest of his family, but also his reluctance to contact.
Russell and Rusty then see the future of 2030, when 70-year-old Russell will be happily married, have four children and have a dog named Chester. Rusty disappears. Russell reveals his love to his colleague Amy.
