Victor Wong (full name: Yee Keung Victor Wong ; born July 30, 1927 in San Francisco , † September 12, 2001 in Locke , California ) was a Chinese - American actor .

biography

As a Chinese born in the States, Victor Wong reported as a journalist between 1968 and 1974 about the demonstrations against the Vietnam War and the story of Patty Hearst . For health reasons, however, he had to give up this job. That's why he became an actor.

Wong was seen on television in the 1979 series Search for Tomorrow with Kevin Bacon . His best-known works include: In the Year of the Dragon , The Last Emperor , Big Trouble in Little China (with Kurt Russell ), In Search of the Golden Child (with Eddie Murphy ), The Princes of Darkness (with Donald Pleasence ), Shanghai Surprise (with Sean Penn and Madonna ) and especially Tremors (with Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward ). In the 1990s he had a recurring role in the 3 Ninjas film series as the grandfather of the young protagonists. With the last part - Mega Mountain Mission - from 1998, his film career also ended.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Wong learned of the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, DC from the television news. With two of his sons living in New York, Wong and wife Dawn Rose spent all day following the news and investigating to catch up on the fate of the two. Although they eventually learned they were both fine, Wong stayed awake and followed the news. The exhaustion and aftermath of two previous strokes, however, eventually took their toll, and Wong died of heart failure sometime on the night of September 12 .
