Duel in the Ice is an American agent thriller from 1992.

The agent Jeffrey West was arrested in Moscow at the beginning of the change there in 1990 for arms trafficking and sentenced to 15 years in a labor camp due to the betrayal of his client, the CIA, in order to avoid an embarrassing international incident. In the event of a serious accident during the transport of prisoners, he changes his identity with that of a Russian who died in the process and who was supposed to come to a simpler camp in a village in the wilderness. When he arrives at the camp, he constantly clashes with the vigilant, brutal and suspicious Stalinist and commanding officer Kolya because of his identity, but he also makes friends, e. B. in the imprisoned and instructing old Fyodor and with the open execution because of the impenetrable periphery he can even afford a lover. When the two are transferred to the ice desert near the border under the sign of glasnost, West takes flight, pursued by the enemy who is shooting at him.

The film was shot on location, u. a. Moscow, Siberia and the Arctic filmed. This appeared to be the first American film made with an authentic Russian-speaking cast after the beginning of glasnost . The shooting was even interrupted by the coup attempt against Gorbachev and the subsequent crumbling government, so that the American occupation and crew had to be evacuated at this point and then flown in again ten days later, with a revised script in their luggage, the new political realities customized. Producer Sneller himself stayed on site to save the set from destruction, otherwise production would not have been able to continue.
