The John Ericsson Memorial , located on Ohio Drive and Independence Avenue in southwest Washington, DC , is dedicated to the man who revolutionized naval history through the use of propellers . The Swedish engineer John Ericsson also has the USS Monitor designed that the supremacy of the Navy Union in the American Civil War secured.

The memorial was approved by Congress on August 31, 1916 and ordered by President Calvin Coolidge and Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden on May 29, 1926 . Congress provided $ 35,000 to build the monument and American citizens, mostly of Scandinavian descent, raised an additional $ 25,000. The memorial was built near the Lincoln Memorial from September 1926 to April 1927 and is 6.10 meters high.

The sculpture by James Earle Fraser shows a seated Ericsson (2 meters high) and three standing figures, which stand for "adventure", "work" and "vision". The memorial is administered by the National Mall and Memorial Parks .
