The memorial was approved by Congress on August 31, 1916 and ordered by President Calvin Coolidge and Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden on May 29, 1926 . Congress provided $ 35,000 to build the monument and American citizens, mostly of Scandinavian descent, raised an additional $ 25,000. The memorial was built near the Lincoln Memorial from September 1926 to April 1927 and is 6.10 meters high.
The sculpture by James Earle Fraser shows a seated Ericsson (2 meters high) and three standing figures, which stand for "adventure", "work" and "vision". The memorial is administered by the National Mall and Memorial Parks .
