Valongo is a municipality and city in the Norte region of Portugal .

history

Finds show prehistoric settlement only on the higher points, which are easy to defend. In particular, the excavations in the Serra de Santa Justa should be mentioned. Later, the inhabitants also settled in lower-lying areas in order to farm in the water-rich plains. With the arrival of the Romans , more important activities can be found here. Large amounts of gold were mined here.

The current location was probably only created during the Reconquista . Today's district area belonged to the two administrative areas of Aguiar de Sousa (municipalities of Campo and Sobrado) and Maia (municipalities of São Vicente da Queimadela, Valongo and São Lourenço de Asmes) in 1258. Watermills in the rivers and the fertile soils ensured lively agricultural activity and a regionally known baking tradition.

Valonge suffered severe damage from French troops during the Napoleonic invasions at the beginning of the 19th century, as well as from the clashes over the Ponte Ferreira bridge during the Miguelistenkrieg between liberals and absolutists.

In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution of 1822 and the civil war of 1832-1834, the municipality of Valongo was raised to the seat of an independent district in 1836, and in 1837 to a small town ( Vila ). Trade and industry continued to develop into the 20th century, which was further boosted by the arrival of the railroad and brought about significant population growth. Only the communities of Campo and Sobrado remained predominantly agricultural. 1990 Valongo was elevated to a city ( Cidade ).
