The CP Urbanos do Porto , also CP Porto , in German "Railways of Portugal Suburban Trains from Porto", formerly Unidade de Suburbanos do Grande Porto (USGP), is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Portuguese state railway Comboios de Portugal . It operates the entire suburban railway network in the Porto area with routes to Aveiro , Braga , Guimarães and Marco de Canaveses . The subsidiary is based in Porto São Bento train station .

history

CP Urbanos do Porto , founded in 1997, operates four suburban railway lines, but almost all of them have mixed traffic with the Intercidades and Alfa trains. All lines begin at the São Bento inner-city train station, run via the inner-city connecting train to the central station in Porto, Porto-Campanhã , and branch out to either the Linha do Minho or Linha do Norte railway line . In contrast to the suburban railway lines in Lisbon, most of the lines in and around Porto are only served every hour and are sometimes supplemented by express trips during rush hour - so the traffic is more similar to German regional express trains than a S-Bahn service. All train services of CP Urbanos do Porto belong to the Urbano train type .

The trains of the 3400 series , procured in 2002 and produced by Siemens Transportation Systems and Bombardier Transportation , are used on almost all suburban lines . At times, however, due to the strong demand, trains from the 2240 series intended for regional traffic are still in use, as the subsidiary does not have enough of its own rolling stock.

Due to the dramatic budget crisis in Portugal since 2008, the Portuguese government is planning to tender the individual line families from the end of 2011, analogous to the CP Urbanos de Lisboa , and thus possibly have them operated by foreign rail companies. However, this has not yet taken place (2014).

For 1½ years, between May 2009 and January 2011, CP Porto also operated local traffic on the Linha de Leixões railway line, which was primarily intended for freight traffic to the port of Leixões . Due to a lack of demand and cost reasons, traffic was stopped again.

There are currently plans to integrate part of the Linha do Vouga narrow-gauge line into the CP Porto network. A feasibility study was carried out on behalf of the Porto Metropolitan Region, which confirmed that the plans had a positive cost-benefit factor. A timely implementation is not yet in sight.
