Urbano , also comboio urbano or comboio suburbano , is a type of train for local rail passenger transport in metropolitan areas of Portugal. In addition to the regional train type , which is mainly operated on branch lines and in more remote regions, it forms the basic offer on the railway lines in the greater Portugal area. The type of train is comparable to the S-Bahn that is widespread in German-speaking areas .

Characteristics

“Urbano” trains are characterized by the fact that they usually stop at all train stations and stops along the route and have a relatively low travel speed . The train type does not include a catering service or the possibility of seat reservations. Urbano train services are assigned to certain lines (Porto) or line families (Lisbon), and they also have synchronous cycle times that vary between 10 and 60 minutes. In addition, Urbano trains are usually driven by specially designed vehicles that are designed for large masses (see below).

With the exception of a section in the greater Porto area ( Caíde - Marco de Canaveses on the Urbano line “Linha de Marco”), all Urbano services in Portugal are operated electrically.

A special branding of the train type, such as the S-Bahn systems in German-speaking areas that have their own logos or explicitly advertise the train type, is not to be seen in Portugal.

business

Urbano trains are almost exclusively run by the two transport sectors CP Urbanos de Lisboa and CP Urbanos do Porto in Lisbon and Porto, respectively. These two sectors alone offered 1,064 train journeys with Urbano trains per day in 2008, which corresponded to a good 65 percent of all train services in Portugal that year. Both business units carried 116 million passengers together in 2008, which corresponds to a good 85 percent of all rail passengers in Portugal. In Lisbon there is also the private transport company Fertagus , which also operates Urbano trains between Lisbon and Setúbal.

In addition to the Urbano trains in the greater Lisbon and Porto area, the trains between the seaside resort of Figueira da Foz and Coimbra (via Alfarelos ) are also referred to as Urbano. The Coimbra network originally had two Urbano lines, from Coimbra to Figueira da Foz (via Cantanhede , mainly Ramal da Figueira da Foz ) and from Coimbra to Serpins (exclusively Ramal da Lousã ). However, both lines have been discontinued in recent years due to line closures. The Urbano train services in Coimbra are operated exclusively by the CP regional transport division .

vehicles

In the greater Lisbon area there are a large number of different vehicle types that drive classic Urbano train services. In the vehicle fleet of CP Urbanos de Lisboa there are vehicles of the 2300/2400 series that can reach a relatively high top speed of 120 km / h and have three doors per car unit on each side. The series was mainly produced for the most heavily used railway line in Portugal, the Linha de Sintra . Furthermore possess CP Urban Services and the private company Fertagus double-decker trains of the 3500 series that have per car unit more than 270 seats and standing room and reach a top speed of 140 km / h. In addition , trains of the 3150/3250 series are used on the only railway line electrified with 1500 volts direct current, the Linha de Cascais . The three series mentioned are used exclusively as suburban trains in the greater Lisbon area.

Most of the Urbano lines in Porto are driven by the 3400 series vehicles produced in 2002 . They are completely continuous and have around 1162 seats and standing places.

Since the train material is scarce in both Porto and Lisbon, the 2240 series , which is actually intended for regional traffic, is used. This is used on the Urbano line between Figueira da Foz and Coimbra.
