Caíde de Rei is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Lousada . It has 2529 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds show a prehistoric settlement, including dolmens and traces from the Castro culture . Remains of Roman houses have also been found. The current place name probably developed from the Arabic Kaid . The community was already documented in the royal surveys of 1220 . It belonged to the Santa Cruz de Riba-Tâmega district until 1855, only to be part of the Lousada district since its dissolution.

Culture and sights

The single-nave, neo- Romanesque parish church with a bell tower, Igreja Matriz de Caíde de Rei ( also Igreja de São Pedro after its patron saint ) dates back to the 16th century.

Further architectural monuments in the community are three mansions or country estates, some of which are still inhabited and managed.
