The class 3500 (brand name "X'TRAPOLIS Tagus") is a four-part, double-decker electric multiple unit of the Portuguese state railway Comboios de Portugal (CP) as well as the private transport company Fertagus . They are the only double-decker trains in Portugal and they are used by both transport companies exclusively in the greater Lisbon area.

history

Fertagus class 3500 train on Ponte 25 de Abril

On behalf of the Portuguese state railway Comboios de Portugal , a consortium of GEC Alsthom and CAF produced 30 of the four-part trains that were intended for S-Bahn traffic in and around Lisbon between 1998 and 2001 . 18 of the four-part wagons, which can also be driven in double traction, were sold by CP to competitor Fertagus , who started operating on the newly opened route between Lisbon Entrecampos and Fogueteiro on July 30th . At the same time, the CP subsidiary CP Urbanos de Lisboa gradually put its 12 trains into operation for its S-Bahn traffic. Technically, the CP trains are absolutely identical to those of the Fertagus, they only differ in the colors (Fertagus blue / white, CP green / white or meanwhile red / white).

The trains cost 115,000,000 Escudos (575,000 euros) each, the total cost was 14 billion Escudos (70,000,000 euros). The inauguration of the first train took place on September 8, 1999 between Vila Franca de Xira and Oriente station, accompanied by the Minister for Planning and Spatial Planning, João Cravinho . The trains started operating on September 26, 1999.

The class 3500 railcars, which are technically very similar to the Spanish class 450 and are also used there in the S-Bahn-like Cercanías traffic in and around Madrid, were the first double-decker trains in Portugal. Due to their passenger capacity, they are particularly suitable for the heavily used routes in the greater Lisbon area.

In 2007 the private transport company Fertagus sold its 18 trains back to the Portuguese state, since then Fertagus has been renting them back for a monthly payment and continues to service the trains itself at the Fogueteiro depot. The CP trains are serviced at Campolide station .

The CP trains have been painted red since 2011.

The four-part trains of the 3500 series are used both by the CP subsidiary CP Urbanos de Lisboa and by Fertagus exclusively in the S-Bahn-like local transport in the greater Lisbon area.

CP Urbanos de Lisboa operates its four S-Bahn lines ( Linha da Azambuja , Linha de Sintra , Linha de Cascais and Linha do Sado ) on a single vehicle basis, so that the class 3500 railcars are only available on the two lines Lisbon Alcântara Terra - Castanheira do Ribatejo and Lisbon Santa Apolónia - Azambuja on the Linha da Azambuja S-Bahn line .

The transport company Fertagus only operates local transport on the Lisbon Roma-Areeiro - Setúbal route , with only every third train going through to Setúbal. The other trains usually end at Coina station beforehand . The line was extended to Roma-Arreeiro in 2003 and to Setúbal in 2004. An extension of the line service to Lisbon's quasi-central station Garo do Oriente is being considered.

Since Fertagus only has trains from the 3500 series and these are the only ones that pass the Ponte 25 de Abril , the blue and white wagons have a very high recognition value and are automatically combined with the "bridge trains" ( os comboios da ponte ) associated.
