Castanheira do Ribatejo is a small Portuguese town in the Vila Franca de Xira district , in the Lisbon district . The community with 7505 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011) is located in the greater area of ​​the Portuguese capital Lisbon and has numerous warehouses and depots for goods traffic due to its geographically favorable location.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1420 when King D. João I gave Castanheira, Povos and Cheleiros to his vassal Gonçalves Vasques de Melo. In 1450 Castanheira was granted city rights for the first time by King D. Afonso V. The place remained an independent district until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg . As a result, the district ( concelho ) Castanheira do Ribatejo was dissolved in 1837 and integrated as a municipality ( freguesia ) into the larger district of Vila Franca de Xira. On September 24, 1985 ( Lei n.º 49/85 ) the place was raised to a small town ( Vila ).

traffic

Since 1855, the small town has had a railway connection to Lisbon via the first railway line in Portugal, Linha do Norte . To this day, this railway connection is fundamental for the development of the community and the surrounding area. Today the station is the terminus of a S-Bahn line of the CP Urbanos de Lisboa .
