Siegfried Leopold Kratochwil (born March 24, 1916 in Karlstift , Lower Austria ; † February 25, 2005 ) was an Austrian painter and poet. He is considered one of the most famous Austrian naive painters .

Life

Kratochwil was born in 1916 in a lumberjack settlement in Karlstift (Lower Austria). After attending vocational school, he first worked as a mechanic and toolmaker. He was forced to try his hand at many different professions. In 1939 he married. The first years of marriage were very problematic as a result of the war, the Russian occupation of Vienna and the economic hardship. His poor health saved him from the military. Kratochwil had to work in an armaments factory.

Kratochwil helped his daughter, who was born in 1941, with drawing and painting - that was the beginning of a 50-year passion for painting that mainly focused on Austrian motifs from culture and history. Kratochwil also dealt with poetry and etchings.

Siegfried L. Kratochwil liked to paint Viennese motifs and wrote a poem for each picture. He was buried in Vienna in 2005.
