The CP series 2240 ( Portuguese UTE 2240) is a series of electrically powered railcars of the Portuguese railway Comboios de Portugal , which is mainly used in regional traffic. The series comprises 57 vehicles.

history

At the end of 1999, the Comboios de Portugal put out a tender to modernize the 2100 , 2150 and 2200 series . A total of two companies and a consortium applied: Adtranz (now Bombardier Transportation ), Alstom and a consortium made up of the CP subsidiary EMEF , Siemens and CAF . With the modernization, the government planned to save 50 percent of the costs compared to a new acquisition. In the planning, 20 units of the 57 trains were planned for the business units CP Urbanos de Lisboa , 19 for CP Urbanos do Porto and 18 for CP Regional . The tender was won by the EMEF-Siemens-CAF consortium.

The modernization took place between 2003 and 2005 in the EMEF plants in Entroncamento. These three series were produced by Sorefame in the Amadora plant between 1970 and 1984 . The cost of the renovation amounted to 117 million euros. After the concept was presented in 2002 and the renovation was carried out from 2003 to 2005, the first renovated train was handed over to its destination in 2004. During the renovation, the trains were given a new front face in red, the metal-colored car bodies with the Soreframe steel were retained.

operation area

The 2240 series is mainly used in regional and suburban traffic for the CP Regional and CP Urbanos do Porto . Occasionally the wagons also run as Intercidades trains, for example on the Linha do Alentejo in 2011 or on the Linha da Beira Baixa on the Lisbon – Covilhã connection since November 2011 , where they encounter strong displeasure on the part of customers. In regional traffic, the trains are used on almost all electrified routes, including the Linha do Norte (Lisbon – Entroncamento, Entroncamento – Coimbra, Coimbra – Aveiro, Aveiro – Porto) and the Linha do Sul (Pinhal Novo – Faro). Between September 2009 and until it was discontinued for economic reasons in early October 2011, the trains also ran on the Linha de Vendas Novas between Setil and Coruche.

Furnishing

The trains are divided into two classes. The first class has 60 seats, the second 192. The trains are electrically operated and run at the voltage of 25 kV 50 Hz, which is common in Portugal. The maximum speed is 120 kilometers per hour.

The trains used in long-distance and regional traffic have a metal-colored car body and a red-blue-black front. The doors are also made of silver. Those units that are used at CP Urbanos do Porto have a yellow and black paint finish, the doors are yellow.
