The Linha de Vendas Novas is a railway line in Portugal that bypasses the Lisbon metropolitan area to the east.
The 69.6 km long rail line was built in 1904. It branches off the Linha do Norte , the Portuguese railroad that connects Lisbon with Porto , at Setil station , and reaches Linha do Alentejo , which leads south from Lisbon, at Vendas Novas station .
Between 2005 and 2009 the Linha de Vendas Novas was only used for freight traffic. Between September 2009 and October 2011, with the financial participation of the local authorities concerned, passenger transport between Setil and Coruche was again offered, comprising five pairs of trains Monday to Friday and three pairs of trains on Saturdays, using modernized Allan diesel multiple units (series 350). The CP subsidiary CP Regional shut down traffic again in October 2011, since an average of only 16 passengers per train, the costs are in no way compared to the ticket income.
The railway line plays a major role in freight transport. Via the Linha do Alentejo or the Linha de Sines, it connects the important Atlantic port of Sines with the factories in the northern metropolitan area of Lisbon, without using the congested railway lines through the Lisbon suburbs (Linha do Sul, Linha de Cintura).
