The class 3400 (brand name " Viriatus ") is a four-part electric multiple unit of the Portuguese state railway Comboios de Portugal (CP). It is currently the youngest series in operation and is used exclusively in the suburban railway-like local transport in the greater Porto area. It is owned by the state railway subsidiary CP Urbanos do Porto .

history

Interior of the 3400 series

To expand the S-Bahn network in the greater Porto area, the State Railways needed new vehicles at the end of the nineties, as the already modernized vehicles of the 2240 series were almost entirely in service with CP Regional for the electrified routes , a further increasing demand in and around Postage however was to be expected. For this reason, the State Railroad announced a Europe-wide competition for the procurement of 34 four-car trains.

The competition was won by a consortium made up of Bombardier Transportation and Siemens Transportations Systems (now Siemens Mobility ). The final production of the 34 vehicles took place in the now closed Bombardier plant in Amadora . Originally only 22 vehicles were to go to Porto, the remaining 12 were to be used in a dual-flow variant on the Linha de Cascais ; the Linha de Cascais is the only line in Portugal that is operated with 1500 volts DC instead of the usual alternating voltage of 25 kV / 50 Hertz. However, that did not happen. The top speed is 140 km / h. All vehicles are under video surveillance.

The first test drives took place around Poceirão on the Linha do Alentejo in spring 2002 , and in July 2002 the first vehicle was able to drive to Porto for test purposes. Due to some technical problems, the 34 could only go into full operation in November 2002 instead of as planned in September.

commitment

Since November 2002, all vehicles have been used exclusively in the S-Bahn network in and around Porto. Originally only used on the “Linha de Marco” S-Bahn line between Porto São Bento and Caíde , since the electrification of the Ramal de Braga in 2003/2004, the trains have been in the entire Porto S-Bahn network, which is operated exclusively by CP Urbanos do Porto operated to find. It has not yet been used on other Portuguese railways.

The class 3400 railcars were the first to be painted yellow. Since then, the other railcars in the service of CP Urbanos do Porto and CP Regional have also been painted yellow bit by bit (series 0592 , 2240 ).
