The bacterium Riemerella anatipestifer is a gram-negative microaerophilic rod bacterium and is very closely related to the pathogen Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale . They both belong to the Flavobacteriaceae family . It is a common pathogen in ducks and occurs in large duck populations in young animals as contagious serositis as an economically important disease.
Riemerella anatipestifer is a gram-negative , immobile rod 1 to 2.5 µm long and 0.3–0.5 µm thick. It can be single or in pairs. Capsule formation is possible. About 20 serovars were described with the help of bacteriological detection methods, but their classification is not homogeneous due to different typing schemes. The bacterium is considered non-pathogenic for pigeons (Columbiformes) and mammals.
