The bacterium Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale is the only representative of the genus Ornithobacterium . It is the causative agent of an infectious respiratory disease in chickens and also plays a role in fibrinous serositis in chickens and turkeys. The Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale-infection is highly contagious for chickens and turkeys . There are great differences in virulence between the serotypes .

properties

O. rhinotracheale is a gram-negative , immobile rod 1–3 µm long and 0.2–0.9 µm thick. It is similar to bacteria from the genus Riemerella and, like these and Flavobacterium, belongs to the Flavobacteriaceae family . In contrast to the genera mentioned, it reacts negatively in the catalase test and positive in the urease test.
