Santa Cruz Cabrália , officially Município de Santa Cruz Cabrália , is a Brazilian coastal city north of Porto Seguro in the state of Bahia . The place has 26,264 inhabitants (as of 2010) who are called Santa Cruzenser.

Historical background

In April 1500, the Portuguese navigator and conqueror Pedro Álvares Cabral landed in the immediate vicinity of Santa Cruz Cabrália . Cabral is considered the discoverer of Brazil and initially called the country Ilha de Vera Cruz (Island of the True Cross) or Terra de Vera Cruz (Land of the True Cross), later it was renamed Terra da Santa Cruz (Land of the Holy Cross). The navigator Gonçalo Coelho , commander of the second Portuguese expedition to Brazil, landed the first missionaries, adventurers and convicts on land in 1503 after landing in the Bay of Cabrália on the north bank of the mouth of the Rio Mutari . Eighty years later, the Santa Cruz settlement was moved to a plateau at the mouth of the Rio João de Tiba , the current historical center. Here the settlers were better protected against the frequent attacks of the natives.

According to Portuguese tradition, Santa Cruz Cabrália was built on two levels. The place consists of two parts, the lower town with a small port for fishing and tourist boats and the historic upper town with the chapel Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição from the 17th century. The first mass on Brazilian soil is said to have been celebrated here on April 26, 1500 . The historic prison from the 18th century and ruins of the first buildings built by Jesuits have been preserved to this day .

The feast of the patron saint takes place every year on December 8th in the Church of the Conception, in the old town of Santa Cruz Cabrália. There are fireworks on the evening before the festival and at dusk in the morning. A solemn mass is then celebrated, followed by a procession in which an image of Mary is carried through the streets of the city. On May 9, 1833, the place received the category vila and was officially called Vila de Santa Cruz until it was renamed Santa Cruz Cabrália in 1933 . The town received city rights on March 30, 1938.

Nature reserve and beaches

The biggest attractions in the area around Santa Cruz Cabrália are the white sandy beaches and the relatively unspoiled coastal vegetation. Excursions by boat on the Rio João de Tiba lead to the river beaches of Santo André, which are part of the nature reserve of Guaiu and Santo Antônio. Here you will also find large coconut plantations on the road to Belmonte (approx. 50 km from Santa Cruz Cabrália). The neighboring town of Belmonte represents the natural separation between the cocoa coast of Ilhéus and the area of the beaches around Porto Seguro and Santa Cruz Cabrália.

Another tourist attraction is the nearby Coroa Vermelha beach . Here the indigenous people of the Pataxó , Itambé, Saracura and Ipê tribes sell their products and souvenirs.

World Cup quarters for the German national team

The German Football Association opened its World Cup quarters in the Vila de Santo André district in 2014 . The national players lived in a newly built holiday complex with 14 houses called Campo Bahia , which was built by a German company. A new training ground had been built in the immediate vicinity.
