Caravelas , officially Portuguese Município de Caravelas , is a small town with an estimated 22,016 inhabitants (as of 2019) on the Atlantic coast in the south of the Brazilian state of Bahia , a few kilometers north of the mouth of the Rio Caravelas . The community area is around 2378 km². The city is the starting point of the Estrada de Ferro Bahia e Minas (Bahia & Minas railway line).

Surrounding places are Alcobaça , Teixeira de Freitas , Medeiros Neto , Lajedão , Ibirapuã and Nova Viçosa . The distance to the capital Salvador is 721 km.

The biome is Mata Atlântica , the climate tropical, Af according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The annual average temperature is 24.3 ° C, the annual rainfall is around 1519 mm.

history

The place was founded in 1581 by Portuguese bandeirantes on the Rio Caravelas and has long been the center of an important whaling industry . The place was incorporated in 1700 as Vila de Santo Antônio do Rio das Caravelas and received city rights in 1855. On May 11, 1823, during the Brazilian War of Independence, a battle between Portuguese and Brazilian naval units took place near Caravelas.

About 70 kilometers east of Caravelas in the South Atlantic is the 280 km² marine national park Abrolhos, established in April 1983, with its five small islands of volcanic origin.
