There are also six major reefs : Parcel dos Abrolhos, Parcel das Paredes, Sebastiao Gomes Reef, Coroa Vermelha Reef, Viçosa Reef and Timbebas Reef. It is the largest reef area in South America.
On the main island of Santa Bárbara , Brazil maintains a military post as well as the administration of the national park and an unoccupied lighthouse in the east . All other islands are undeveloped and uninhabited all year round.
history
The islands were probably discovered by Amerigo Vespucci in 1503 . Because of the numerous reefs, this region was considered extremely dangerous by seafarers, especially for the earlier wooden ships, as numerous ships ( wrecks ) sunken there prove. The name "Abrolhos" should therefore be traced back to a phrase taken from the Portuguese language - "abri vossos olhos - open your eyes".
Controversy
In April 2019, the Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) approved oil drilling.
