Belmonte , officially Portuguese Município de Belmonte , is a municipality in Brazil in the state of Bahia . The population was estimated at 23,328 inhabitants as of July 1, 2019, who are called Belmontenser ( belmontenses ). The area of ​​the municipality is around 1939.4 km² (2018). The distance to the capital Salvador is 695 km. Belmonte is the northernmost town on the Costa do Descobrimento and has several beaches on the Atlantic.

history

The community was founded in 1764 as Vila de Nossa Senhora do Carmo do Belo Monte and received town status and self-government rights on May 23, 1891. The place was named after the likely place of birth Belmonte in Portugal of Pedro Álvares Cabral, who was considered the discoverer of Brazil . In addition to Belmonte as the seat of the large municipal area, there are also the districts of Boca do Córrego and Mogiquiçaba.

There are still many preserved colonial-style buildings from the cocoa baron era. They are near the pier on the Rio Jequitinhonha , which flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Belmonte , and the bus station ( Rodoviaria ).
