Itapé is a place and a district in the Guairá department in Paraguay , 144 km from Asunción and 20 km from Villarrica on the Río Tebicuary . The place has 1650 inhabitants (2002 census), the district about 7900 inhabitants (2019 estimate).

history

Itapé was founded as an Indio reduction by the Franciscan Buenaventura de Villasboa . There are various information about the year of foundation, 1672, 1673, 1678, 1686. A museum was dedicated to the founder in the village. The Museo Fray Buenaventura de Villasboa was opened in 1988 and was initially located in the rectory. However, after several figures of saints were stolen, which were found and returned after a series of investigations, the museum was moved in 2008 to the secured rear part of the church building.

Virgen del Paso

The main attraction of the place is the natural sanctuary of the Virgen del Paso , a chapel that was built on the banks of the Tebicuary River in 1955 and attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists annually. At high tide it is completely surrounded by water. Inside is a copy of the Virgin of Caacupé, the patroness of Paraguay's Catholics. On December 18, there is an annual boat procession on the river. There are reports of supposed miracle healings.
