history
The city was originally founded on May 14, 1570 under the name Villa Rica del Espíritu Santo by the conquistador Ruy Díaz de Melgarejo on the banks of the Río Paraná and only moved to the current location in 1682 , after which, according to legend, the location moved seven times to different hills . These seven hills together make up today's urban area. In the late colonial period, the city flourished and was almost as important as Asunción until it was almost completely destroyed in the Triple Alliance War . In 1889 it was connected to Asunción by the Paraguayan railway line.
