Villarrica is a university town and climatic health resort in the center of southern Paraguay and has around 66,000 inhabitants (2015 calculation) . It is the capital of the Guairá department and is 140 km east-southeast of Asunción . The nearby mountainous Ybytyruzu National Park is attractive to tourists.

geography

Villarrica borders in the north with Yataity del Guairá and Mbocayaty del Guairá , in the west with Félix Pérez Cardozo and Itapé , in the east with Colonia Independencia and General Eugenio A. Garay , and in the south with San Salvador and Borja .

The Ruta 8 road runs through the city from Coronel Oviedo to Coronel Bogado .

history

The city was originally founded on May 14, 1570 under the name Villa Rica del Espíritu Santo by the conquistador Ruy Díaz de Melgarejo on the banks of the Río Paraná and only moved to the current location in 1682 , after which, according to legend, the location moved seven times to different hills . These seven hills together make up today's urban area. In the late colonial period, the city flourished and was almost as important as Asunción until it was almost completely destroyed in the Triple Alliance War . In 1889 it was connected to Asunción by the Paraguayan railway line.
