Valença town hall

Valença is a port city in the state of Bahia in Brazil . On an area of 1,195.6 km² it houses 96,507 inhabitants. The population density is 80.92 inhabitants per km² (as of 2015). The municipal area is divided into the four districts Valença, Guerem, Maricoabo and Serra Grande.

history

The place was inhabited by the Tupi tribe of the Tupiniquins when Portuguese settlers under the leadership of the wealthy, but despotic Sebastião de Pontes settled here permanently between 1557 and 1571 . After the detention Pontes the economic development of stopped Ponta do Curral called settlement until the people finally of Aimoré of -Indianern Botocudos -Volkes were expelled. It was not until the 18th century that Bandeirantes settlers who arrived from São Paulo , led by João Amaro Maciel Parante, drove out the aimoré again. The village was now known as Una . On January 23, 1799, it was elevated to a small town ( Vila ) under the name Vila de Nova Valença do Santíssimo Coração de Jesus and thus the seat of its own district, by hiving off from the Cairu district .

On November 10, 1849 Valença was elevated to a city ( Cidade ), under the name Industrial Cidade de Valença . On December 30, 1953, Valença received its current structure with the four districts under its current name. The city has around 22 bairros (urban districts).

Economy and tourism

Valença is known today as one of the centers for seafood and its breeding farms, which are sold as far as the capital Salvador da Bahia . Tourists use the city as a transit station to reach the island of Morro de São Paulo by boat or by plane via Valença Airport ( IATA airport code : VAL) . Some Europeans and Argentines retire here or run small hotels. Many Valençans, on the other hand, go to Guaibim, the beach town of Valença, 10 km away.

The old churches "Matriz do Sagrado Coração de Jesus" from 1749 and "Nossa Senhora do Desterro" , which is located on a steep hill, are worth seeing . From here you can see the whole city and the port. The ruins of the old textile factories from 1844 are also worth a visit.
