Jerzy Stefan Stawiński (born July 1, 1921 in Zakręt near Warsaw ; † June 12, 2010 ibid) was a Polish writer, screenwriter and film director.

Life

Stawiński began studying law at Warsaw University in 1938 . When the Second World War began on September 1, 1939 , he became a soldier and took part in the defense of Warsaw. After the surrender of the Polish army, he went underground and joined the Polish Home Army . As a highly decorated soldier, he took part in the Warsaw Uprising in August / September 1944 . During the uprising, he was taken prisoner by Germany and was deported to Germany . After his liberation in May 1945 he went to Italy and joined the 2nd Polish Corps , later he went to England and did not return to Poland until 1947. Back in Warsaw, he resumed the studies he had begun in 1938 and completed it in 1952. Through literary translations he found literature in 1949 and began working for a state publishing house. In 1952 he made his literary debut with the story Licht im Nebel .

For his early story The Secret of the Locomotive Driver Orzechowski , he wrote his first screenplay , which the director Andrzej Munk filmed with the title The Man on the Rails in 1956. In his second script (also based on one of his short stories) he processed his experiences in the Warsaw uprising. The film, entitled The Canal , made its director Andrzej Wajda world famous. He traveled to the Cannes Film Festival in 1957 with Wajda and Polish officials and the film won the Special Jury Prize . Stawiński received offers from French filmmakers to write screenplays for them too, because they considered his ideas to be fictional, but he had only described what he had actually experienced. He never accepted these offers, but stayed with the Polish cinema as a screenwriter and later as a director. He also worked as artistic director for several Polish film studios until 1981.
