Supremo Tribunal Federal
The Supremo Tribunal Federal (German: Supreme Federal Court ) is the supreme court of the Federal Republic of Brazil (court of last instance) and also exercises the function of a constitutional court. After the end of the Brazilian Empire in 1889, the Supremo Tribunal Federal took the place of the Supremo Tribunal de Justiça, which was created in 1824 under the Constitution of 1822 .
The court consists of 11 judges, called ministers, including the court president. Luiz Fux has been President of the court since September 10, 2020, succeeding Dias Toffoli .
Architecture and building history
Its representative seat is on the south side of Praça dos Três Poderes in Brasília . The building is based on a design by the architect Oscar Niemeyer and was already part of the Plano piloto . On April 21, 1960, the Supremo Tribunal Federal met for the first time at its new headquarters. In addition to the representative main building, two other buildings are now used for the tasks of the Supremo Tribunal Federal.
