The place Morro de São Paulo is located on the island of Ilha de Tinharé , in the municipality of Cairu , in the state of Bahia in Brazil .
The region is also known under the name Costa do Dendê , because the palm oil ( Azeite de Dendê ) is extracted here from oil palms . Today the place is an insider tip for Brazilian tourism , as the island's beaches are considered to be very beautiful. Morro de São Paulo has its own tourist infrastructure with many guest houses and restaurants. The island can be reached by ferry. On the entire island - comparable to Heligoland - any kind of motor vehicle traffic is not permitted.
history
The place is strongly connected to the Brazilian history of discovery, because it was settled in 1531 by the Portuguese conqueror Martim Afonso de Sousa . The place was the scene of many attacks by the French and Dutch who tried to take parts of the colony of Brazil from the Portuguese. In addition, the place was also a hideout for pirates during the entire colonial period. In 1728 a fort was built to defend the island and its hinterland. In 1845 the church and monastery Convento Santo Antônio and later the lighthouse, visible from afar, were completed. The historical buildings of the Morro de São Paulo are now listed.
