Pataxó

The Pataxó , also Patashó, Patachó , are an indigenous people in Brazil . They were the first "Indians" who had contact with the Portuguese conquerors. Today a large part of the Pataxó lives in the Indian reservation, officially Portuguese Terra Indígena Barra Velha do Monte Pascoal , of the Monte Pascoal National Park near Porto Seguro in the state of Bahia .

There are a total of 36 forest villages (aldeias) in seven reserves in the southernmost part of Bahia, as well as another seven communities in the northern part of Minas Gerais . The number was given in 2010 by the Brazilian statistical institute IBGE as 13,588 people, that of Pataxó Hã-Hã-Hãe in the same year by FUNASA as 2,375.

They live from agriculture and from the sale of their typical jewelry ( feather jewelry ).

About language

The Pataxó language ( Pataxó Hã-Hã-Hãe ) belongs to the Macro-Ge languages , was still spoken by some tribal members in 1938 and has since been largely lost. In 2012, the IBGE stated the number of speakers as 836, in 2010 as 772 between 5 and 50 years. Curt Nimuendajú , who had visited the tribe in 1938, also stated a language relationship with the Maxakalí . Today, the mother tongue of all Pataxó is Portuguese .
