Monte Pascoal is a nature park and Indian reservation in the state of Bahia ( Brazil ).

The Monte Pascoal National Park was created on November 29, 1961 to protect the nature and mountain formation of the 536 meter high island mountain Monte Pascoal ("Osterberg"). The mountain has an important historical significance for the settlement history of Brazil, as the Portuguese conquerors of the country under the command of Pedro Álvares Cabral saw the mountain from the sea on April 22, 1500 (Easter) as the first high point visible. On April 26, 1500, a Catholic mass was celebrated not far from the mountain on the beach of Coroa Vermelha , which was also attended by some indigenous people.

meaning

The park is one of the most important protected areas of the Atlantic rainforest in the south of Bahia. Since 1999 it has been part of the 110,000 hectare Costa do Descobrimento and as such is under the protection of UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. In this ecosystem there are more than 10,000 plant species (such as jatobá , Brazilian wood , and rosewood ) and hundreds of species of mammals ( also the endangered jaguar and anteater ), birds such as the very rare red-billed hokko , amphibians and reptiles . There are salt marshes and mangrove forests in the park as transitional ecosystems between the coast and the rainforest . In the recent past there have been repeated illegal logging in the park. The protected island area of Abrolhos is located near the coast .

The coast of southern Bahia was inhabited by indigenous peoples long before the arrival of the Portuguese conquerors . Porto Seguro , located 62 km north of the park at an estuary, was created later .

Indians of the Pataxó , some of whom also live in the park, offer self-made art objects made of wood and feather ornaments in Porto Seguro and at the entrance to the national park. There are always conflicts over land rights between Indians and the Brazilian government.
