The Portuguese national football team of women ( port. : Seleção Portuguesa de Futebol Feminino ) represents Portugal in international women's football . The national team reports to the Portuguese Football Association. In international comparison, the Portuguese selection is one of the strongest nations on average. In contrast to their male colleagues, the selection of women did not show any notable successes. In 2016, the team qualified for a major football tournament for the first time, the 2017 European Women's Football Championship .
In qualifying for the 2011 World Cup , the team met Italy , Finland , Slovenia and Armenia . The four defeats against Italy and Finland were offset by four wins against Slovenia and Armenia, so that in the end ranked third.
In the FIFA world rankings, the best ever ranking was achieved in October 2003 with 32nd place, then it went down to 47th place in March 2007 and March 2008, a rather slow increase to 39th place, which has been occupied since November 2010. In July 2011 there was an improvement to 36th place, as some other teams lost places.
In qualifying for the EM 2013 , Portugal met Austria among others . After two wins against Armenia and six defeats against the other group members, only the penultimate place was occupied.
For EM 2017 they could qualify as the last team. Despite a win against Scotland, they were eliminated in the preliminary round.

Algarve Cup
In addition to the Scandinavian co-organizer Denmark, the Portuguese team took part in all previous Algarve Cup events, but was able to achieve one of the top four places for the first time in 2018 with third place. The best ranking before that was fifth place in the first edition in 1994 when only six teams participated. Since the four worse teams started in Group C from 2003 to 2014 and thus could not take any of the first six places, Portugal always played in Group C. With 19 goals each, Carla Couto was together with Abby Wambach the record scorer of the tournament until 2013 but then still outbid by Wambach. Portugal has so far played against 30 of the 35 other participants, only against Belgium (so far only participation in 2016), Germany, Switzerland (so far only participation in 2015), Spain (so far only participation in 2017) and South Korea (first participation in 2018) there have been no games at the Algarve Cup. The games against the current best teams all took place before 2003. In 2015, after a change in the mode, Portugal had the chance to reach the final again for the first time, after which the winners of Group C could also reach the final, which France also managed, but only finished bottom of the group, so that they played against China for 11th place. Portugal won on penalties to finish eleventh. In 2016, the tournament took place again with only eight and also weaker teams, which gave Portugal another chance of winning the tournament, but lost all group games and also the game for seventh place. In 2018, Portugal played in Group A, with all group winners again having a chance of winning the tournament. Portugal won the group games for the first time against an Asian team (China) and Norway and reached the game for third place against Australia, against which there was a goalless draw in the group games. In the game for third place they won against Australia for the first time - after two goalless draws. This was the first time the Portuguese won against a team placed in the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings .
