European Women's Football Championship 2017 / Portugal
This article covers the Portuguese national team at the 2017 European Women's Football Championship in the Netherlands . Portugal entered the finals for the first time and were the last to qualify.
qualification
Portugal was drawn for qualification in Group 2 and met neighbors Spain and Finland , Ireland and, for the first time, Montenegro . Portugal started with a 1: 2 home defeat in the qualification, then won the home game against Montenegro, but then lost both games against the Spaniards. The race to catch up started with a 3-0 win in Montenegro. Although it was only enough for a goalless draw in Finland and in the home game against the Finns they were 2-0 down after 27 minutes, but Cláudia Neto scored two minutes later and then equalized with a penalty in the 45th minute and in the 84th minute again the winning goal from a penalty. However, they still had three points less than the Northern Europeans and needed a win in Ireland on the last day of the game and were also dependent on Spanish neighborhood help against Finland, which the Spaniards delivered with a 5-0 victory. In Ireland it was Neto again who scored the only goal of the game in the 78th minute. The Portuguese and Finns were tied on points and since the Portuguese had won the direct comparison, they were second in the group. However, they were the worst runners-up in the group and therefore had to play in two playoff games against the second-worst runners-up Romania, where they had reached home first. After a 0-0 home game it was also 0-0 in the second leg after 90 minutes, so the game was extended. Then Andreia Norton , who came on in the 78th minute for her first international match, scored the 1-0 for Portugal in stoppage time in the first half of extra time with her first international goal. The Romanians were able to equalize in the 111th minute, but due to the away goals rule , Portugal qualified for the European Championship finals for the first time. The best Portuguese goalscorer in qualifying was Cláudia Neto, who scored six goals, the most effective of all players was Edite Fernandes , who scored four goals in just 139 minutes.

A few days earlier, record goalscorer Edite announced her resignation from the national team. In March 2017, the team hosted the traditional Algarve Cup again , which served as preparation for seven other European Championship participants. There they met the European Championship participants Denmark (0: 6) and Russia (0: 1) as well as defending champions Canada (0: 0) and at the end of the match for 11th place against European champions Norway (0: 2). In the immediate preparation the Portuguese played twice against Wales , on June 8th in Viseu (1: 2) and on the 11th in Mangualde (1: 0).

At the draw on November 8, 2016, Portugal was assigned to Pot 4. Portugal will face qualifying opponents Spain in the first game in group D , then the Scottish women, who are also participating for the first time, and finally England . The balance against all three group opponents is negative: in seven games against England there has been no win and only two draws in five defeats, against Scotland and the eastern neighbors at least two wins and against the Scottish women three draws, but five games against the Scottish women and three against the Spanish women were lost. The last win against Scotland was very high at 8-2, but it took place 22 years ago on May 29, 1994. Three years later, on October 18, 1997, there was the last victory against Spain.

In their first European Championship final match, the Portuguese, who went into the tournament as the worst in the FIFA world rankings , lost 2-0 to their Iberian neighbors. They then managed a 2-1 victory against the Scottish women, who were 17 places better in the FIFA world rankings. This gave them the chance to qualify for the quarter-finals before the last game against England. For this they needed at least one draw and the help of the Scottish women who had to win against Spain. The Scottish women did them a favor and the Portuguese held the draw against England until the 48th minute, but then had to accept another goal. The subsequent attack efforts were unsuccessful. As a result, the Portuguese were eliminated as the bottom of the group due to a direct comparison with Scotland and Spain. The goals scored and conceded against England were of no consequence.
