2017 European Women's Football Championship / Norway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the Norwegian national team at the 2017 European Women's Football Championship in the Netherlands . With the exception of the first edition in 1984, Norway took part in all the finals and won the title twice (1987 and 1993) and is the second most successful team after Germany. In 2017, the Norwegians could not score a goal or win a point at a European Championship finals for the first time and were eliminated as the bottom of the group.

qualification

Ada Hegerberg, best scorer in qualification

After being eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2015 World Cup, national coach Even Pellerud resigned and Roger Finjord took over the post. Norway was drawn for qualification in Group 8 and met Kazakhstan for the first time, against which both games were won. Another opponent were the Austrians, who conceded goals in the 2-2 home game for the first time and did not win. But these were the only loss of points and the only goals conceded, because like Kazakhstan, Israel and Wales were defeated in both games. The Norwegians qualified for the finals on June 7, 2016. The best Norwegian scorer in the qualification was Ada Hegerberg , who with 10 goals was the best scorer in the qualification together with two other players, but needed more playing minutes. Ingrid Hjelmseth made her 100th international match in the home game against Wales . Isabell Herlovsen scored her 50th international goal in the last group game against Israel . After the successful qualification, Roger Finjord resigned as national coach.

preparation

After the successful qualification, Leif Gunnar Smerud, the coach of the men's U-21 team, took over the coaching position and looked after the team in the last two games of the year. In this, the Norwegians played against their neighbor Sweden on October 24th and parted without a goal. On November 29th, another friendly match against defending champions and Olympic champions Germany resulted in a 1-1 draw. In December, Martin Sjogren became the new national coach. Under him, the Norwegians started the European Championship year with two friendly matches against England (1-0) and Sweden (2-1) in January 2017 on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Participation in the Algarve Cup in March was less successful, where the EM participants Iceland (1: 1) and Spain (0: 3) as well as vice world champions Japan (0: 2) were the opponents in the group games. After that, it was only enough to play for 11th place against hosts Portugal , which was won 2-0, but 11th place is the worst placement of the Norwegians at this tournament so far. On April 10th in Skien they won 2-1 against the newcomer Switzerland , who won the Cyprus Cup 2017 , which was held parallel to the Algarve Cup . On June 11, world champions USA visited Norway and won 1-0 against the Norwegians. On July 11th, the Norwegians drew 1-1 with France in Sedan .

Accommodation during the final round will be the Bilderberg Hotel De Keizerskroon in Apeldoorn .

Venues and district (blue)

In the draw on November 8, 2016, Norway was assigned to Pot 2. Norway met hosts Netherlands in the opening game in preliminary group A , then Belgium and then Denmark . Against Belgium there were nine wins, one draw and one defeat in eleven games, this in the last game so far on May 23, 2015 in preparation for the 2015 World Cup. The results against the Netherlands are also positive: in twice as many games there were 13 wins, five draws and four defeats. The last game - in the Olympic qualification in March 2016, which was ultimately unsuccessful for both of them - the Norwegians won 4-1. Denmark is the third most popular opponent of the Norwegians (after Sweden and the USA) and in 43 games they have 19 wins, 13 draws and 11 losses. Most recently the game for 5th place at the Algarve Cup 2015 was won 5: 2. The last loss to Denmark was on March 5, 2012 in an Algarve Cup group game .

The first final game in Group A was lost in the opening game against hosts Netherlands by a goal by van de Sanden with 0-1. The Norwegians also failed to score against Belgium and Denmark, but their opponents and so the Norwegians were eliminated as the bottom of the group.
