2017 European Women's Football Championship / Russia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the Russian national team at the 2017 European Women's Football Championship in the Netherlands . Russia took part in the finals for the fifth time and was able to win a final game for the first time, but was eliminated in the preliminary round.

qualification

Russia was drawn for qualification in group 5 and met defending champions Germany in the World Cup qualifying as they did two years earlier . The Russians lost both games against the Germans again, but the away game with which they started the qualification was not as high as in the World Cup qualification. Other opponents were Hungary , Croatia and Turkey , against whom they did not get beyond a goalless draw in the second game. Since they also surrendered one point in the 3: 3 home game against Hungary, they were sixth-best group runner-up ahead of Romania and thus qualified directly for the finals only because of one more goal scored. With only 14 goals, they are the finalists with the fewest qualifying goals. The best Russian goal scorers in the qualification were Jelena Danilowa , Nadeschda Karpowa , Jekaterina Pantjuchina and Jelena Terechowa with two goals each.

Russia was drawn into Group B and met Italy in the first game of the only group without a newcomer to the European Championship , then against qualifying opponents Germany and Sweden . There were only four defeats against Sweden, including three in the European Championship preliminary rounds in 1997, 2001 and 2009. Against the other two opponents, the record is negative: against the Germans there were two draws and 16 in 18 games before the draw Losses and against Italy in seven games there were three wins and four losses (the last four games, all of which ended 2-0).
