preparation
In March 2016, the Dutch hosted the qualifying tournament for the third European starting place at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . The Dutch took second place behind the later silver medalist Sweden, ahead of Switzerland and Norway, which was not enough to participate in the Olympic Games. In subsequent friendly matches, they won against the lower- placed teams in the FIFA world rankings , New Zealand (2-0), South Africa (1-0 and 2-0) and Scotland (7-0), and the better-placed teams Canada (1: 0). 2), USA (1: 3) and Germany (2: 4) but lost. There was also a last-minute defeat against final opponents Belgium and a 0-1 defeat against England at the end of November. After that, the tenure of bond coach Arjan van der Laan ended, as the KNVB did not trust him to lead the team successfully into the European Championship finals. The post was initially taken over temporarily by the former national player and assistant coach Sarina Wiegman , who held the post on an interim basis after the 2015 World Cup and then took over the post full-time in January 2017. The Dutch started the European Championship year with a training camp and games against Romania, which missed the European Championship finals in the playoffs against Portugal, on January 20th (7: 1) and European Championship participants Russia (4: 0) on January 24th in Spain. In March 2017, participation in the Algarve Cup was on the program, where the team met in the group games against EM participants Sweden (1: 0) as well as Australia (2: 3) and China (1: 0), three teams, who survived the group stage at the 2016 Olympic Games. In the game for 5th place, Vice World Champion Japan was defeated 3-2. In April the Dutch played against European champions France on the 7th (1: 2) and Iceland on the 11th (4: 0). On June 9th they played again against the Japanese and lost 1-0 in Breda . On June 13th they played against EM newcomer Austria and won 3-0. At the end of the preparation, Wales were defeated 5-0 on July 8th .
Accommodation during the final round will be the Woudschoten Hotel & Conference Center in Zeist .

At the draw on November 8, 2016, the Netherlands was assigned to Pot 1 as hosts and set as the group head of Group A. The Netherlands met Norway in the opening game , then Denmark and in the final group game against EM newcomer and neighbor Belgium . Against Belgium there were 20 wins, four draws and three defeats in 27 games up to the draw. Even before the draw, both had agreed on a friendly game for November 24, 2016, which was lost 3-2. Against Denmark and Norway, however, the balance is negative. Against the Danes there were five wins and five draws, but ten defeats, although the last four games were won, including the last group game at the 2009 European Championships , which made the Dutch women reach the knockout round in their first finals and advanced to the semi-finals. Against Norway there were four wins, six draws and 13 defeats, most recently in the unsuccessful Olympic qualification.
