Soccer World Cup 2003 / Qualification
Qualification for the 2003 Women's World Cup
The qualifying matches for the 2003 Women's World Cup took place from August 16, 2001 to July 12, 2003.
99 associations had registered for the World Cup. But only 81 teams were able to start the actual World Cup qualification. Because UEFA sorted out 18 weak European teams that had already played a pre-qualification for the 2007 World Cup . A total of 16 starting places were awarded. No team was spared qualifying games, neither the hosts and defending champions USA , nor the originally intended host China . All qualification options include either the championship or the tournament system.
For the World Cup tournament in the USA in 2003, a total of 99 teams had registered, including
- 16 teams from Europe , class A: played for qualification for the 2003 World Cup final tournament
- 18 teams from Europe, class B: played for class A membership in the 2007 World Cup qualification
- 10 teams from South America
- 18 teams from North and Central America
- 19 teams from Africa
- 13 teams from Asia
- 5 teams from Oceania

European Zone / UEFA
The teams were divided into two classes according to their level of performance.
The strong team in Class A and the weaker teams in class B .
Class A: 16 teams play the five finalists of the 2003 World Cup in four groups of four . The four group winners qualified directly for the World Cup finals, the four group runners-up determined the fifth participant in two play-offs.
Class B: 18 teams played in two groups of four and two groups of five. The four group winners and the best runner-up in the group will play in the A-class in qualifying for the 2007 World Cup . None of the participants in the B-Class had the opportunity to qualify for the 2003 World Cup.

North and Central America / CONCACAF
In a group of five, five Central American teams determine two participants in the CONCACAF championship. Twelve Caribbean teams also identified three further participants for the CONCACAF championship in the USA. The three teams from the northern zone USA, Mexico and Canada were seeded for the CONCACAF championship.
The CONCACAF championship in the USA also served as qualification for the 2003 World Cup in the USA. The two finalists qualified for the 2003 World Cup in the USA. The third still had the chance to qualify for the World Cup in a playoff against the Asian fourth .

The tournament in Thailand served as both a World Cup qualifier and an Asian championship. The first three qualified for the 2003 World Cup . The Asian fourth still had the chance to qualify for the 2003 World Cup in an intercontinental playoff against the CONCACAF third .

21 African teams identified seven participants in the final Africa tournament in Nigeria in two knockout rounds. In addition, the eighth participant was the host Nigeria.
In two groups of four, the two group winners qualified for the semi-finals. Both finalists qualified for the 2003 World Cup . The tournament was also the Africa championship.
