The Papua New Guinea women's national football team represents the independent island state of Papua New Guinea in international women's football . The national team is subordinate to the Papua New Guinean Football Association.

history

Papua New Guinea is a member of the world football association FIFA and the regional association OFC. So far, the team has not yet managed to qualify for a soccer World Cup. The Oceania championship title has not yet been won either. They made their first official game at the 1989 Oceania Championship, although that was actually planned for the 1986 OFC Championship. But the team was withdrawn shortly before the start of this tournament, so that the New Zealand national team sent two teams (an A and B team) to an OFC tournament.

Before the international match against Thailand in March 2015

With Australia joining the AFC , the Papua New Guinean team has become the second force in Oceania, but the gap to New Zealand is still large, as the 11-0 defeat in the 2010 Oceania Championship final shows. In qualifying for the Olympic Games in London, they both met in the play-off games. With four victories against other oceanic teams, Papua New Guinea qualified for these games and thus placed in the top 50 of the FIFA world rankings for the first time in March 2012 . In the play-off games against New Zealand, however, the difference in performance showed again. The games were lost with 0: 8 and 0: 7.

At the Oceania Championship in 2014 , however, they only lost 3-0 and took second place again. Since Oceania, unlike the other confederations, only received one starting place at the 2015 World Cup, this went to New Zealand.
