It is one of the six continental associations of the world football association FIFA and comprises a total of 47 national associations from individual countries and regions. Australia has also been a member of the AFC since 2006.

The AFC was founded on May 8, 1954 in the Philippine capital Manila , when the representatives of twelve Asian football associations met for the 1954 Asian Games . The founding members of the AFC were Afghanistan , Burma , the Republic of China (Taiwan) , Hong Kong , India , Indonesia , Japan , the Republic of Korea , Pakistan , the Philippines , Singapore, and South Vietnam . The first president of the association was Man Kam-loh from Hong Kong, the general secretary Lee Wai-thong was also from Hong Kong, where the association also had its first seat. Two years after the association was founded, the first Asian Championship took place in Hong Kong.
