history
The history of organized women's soccer in North Korea began in 1985, according to the state news agency . A women's soccer team was formed in what was then the South Phyongan Provincial Sports Group ( 평안 남도 선수단 ), and others followed. On May 19, 1986, a training game was played in the Pyongyang Kim-Il-sung Stadium .
At the Asian Women's Championship in 1989 , the North Korean team played an international match for the first time. At the start, however, they lost 4-1 to the then dominant Chinese , and North Korea also lost 3-1 to Taiwan . The first victory was celebrated 4-0 over Thailand , but it was no longer enough to advance. Just one year later, however, there was already some progress. At the Asian Games in China in 1990, North Korea finished third behind China and Japan and won the first title for North Korean women's football with the bronze medal.
The 1991 Asian Cup was also the Asian qualifying tournament for the first World Cup in the same year. North Korea finished the group stage in second place behind Japan and met China in the semifinals, where the North Koreans lost 1-0. In the decisive game for third and final World Cup place, North Korea and Taiwan were goalless after 120 minutes, so the penalty shoot -out would be decided by the last Asian World Cup participant; North Korea lost 4-5 and narrowly missed qualifying. At the Asian Cup in 1993 they won the group and made it to the finals, but there they lost again to the Chinese team. After the 0: 3, the team had to be satisfied with second place. The team did not travel to the Asian Games in 1994, which were played in Hiroshima , Japan and served as qualification for the 1995 World Cup. North Korea was also absent from the 1995 Asian Cup.
Qualification for the 1999 World Cup was achieved through the 1997 Asian Cup . In the preliminary round match against China in Guangzhou they lost 3-1 and finished the group stage in second place. The decisive semi-final against Japan was won 1-0, however, so North Korea qualified for the World Cup for the first time. In the final they lost again to the Chinese team, this time with 0: 2. They also lost the final of the Asian Games in 1998 1-0 to the same opponent.
At the 1999 World Cup, North Korea, who qualified for the first time, faced the host USA's teams as well as Nigeria and Denmark . The first World Cup game against the Africans was lost 2-1, four days later they defeated Denmark 3-1 and still had chances to advance, which were not fulfilled after the 0-3 against the USA. With three points, North Korea retired as third party in the first participation.
The final round of the 2001 Asian Cup brought North Korea to its first women's football title. After they achieved their highest victory (24: 0) in a women's international match in the preliminary round against Singapore , the semi-finals saw their first victory over China in 12 years. The previous defending champion was defeated 3-1. The team won the final against Japan with goals from Ri Kum-suk in the 68th minute and Ri Un-gyong in the 75th minute with 2-0, making them Asian champions for the first time. A year later, the team also won the Asian Games by two points over China. The Asian title was defended in the 2003 final in a 2-1 win over China.
The group stage draw for the 2003 World Cup showed that North Korea would again face the teams of the USA and Nigeria. In addition, was Sweden opponents at the finals. The East Asians got off to a good start in the 3-0 win over Nigeria, but lost to Sweden just 0-1. The last group game against the USA was lost 3-0, as it had been four years earlier, so that North Korea had to return home after the preliminary round. In 2004 the qualification for the Olympic Summer Games in Athens was missed, in the decisive semifinals North Korea lost to the hosts of the qualification Japan 3-0.
The 2006 Asian Cup ended disappointingly for North Korea, with the team losing 1-0 to China in the semi-finals. After the subsequent attacks by North Korean players on the Italian referee Anna De Toni , the FIFA goalkeeper Han Hye-yong was suspended for one year, while the AFC suspended the defenders Sonu Kyong-sun and Song Jong-sun with a four-month suspension and a penalty of 3,000 each US $ . After all, the team still won the third place qualifying for direct World Cup qualification after a 3-2 win over Japan. At the Asian Games in 2006 , North Korea won gold again, the final against Japan was defeated 4-2 on penalties.
At the 2007 World Cup in China , the North Koreans faced the USA and Nigeria for the third time in a row and Sweden for the second time. At the beginning of the tournament, North Korea reached a surprising 2-2 against the USA. The Asians won the second group game 2-0 against Nigeria, so they qualified for the quarter-finals despite the subsequent defeat against Sweden. In the round of the last eight you had to admit defeat to defending champion and eventual world champion Germany with 0: 3 after a tough fight and a long balanced game .
At the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games , North Korea was able to assert itself as group winner. The team finished qualifying with six wins, including home and away wins against Australia , and 51-0 goals. In its first Olympic participation, North Korea faced the German selection (0: 1) as well as Brazil (1: 2) and Nigeria (1: 0). For the East Asian women, the first participation ended in the preliminary round.
North Korea secured their third Asian Cup title in 2008 at the finals in Vietnam . There, the selection won all five games, including the 2-1 over China in the final. At the subsequent Asian Cup two years later, North Korea reached the final again, but there they had to admit defeat to the team from Australia on penalties. The finals secured North Korea the fourth World Cup participation in a row.
The 2011 World Cup in Germany was disappointing for North Korea , where they faced the USA for the fourth time and lost 2-0. After the game against Sweden was also lost 1-0, the end of the preliminary round was already clear before the last group game against World Cup newcomers Colombia . North Korea also failed to score against the South Americans, but at least a point was won through the 0-0, so that the group was finished in third. Before the game, Song Jong-sun and Jong Pok-sim were provisionally banned after positive A-samples and all North Korean players were asked to take part in a doping test after the game. After that, the North Koreans fled Germany. On July 16, it was reported that doping agents had been detected in three other players. In the FIFA world rankings , North Korea fell four places, leaving the top 10 for the first time. In the meantime u. a. achieved 8th place through the successful qualification for the Olympic Games in London and victory at the Four Nations Tournament 2012 .
On August 25, 2011, FIFA announced that North Korea had been banned from participating in the 2015 World Cup in Canada , four players were banned for 18 months and one for 14 months. North Korea's football association also had to repay the EUR 400,000 premium for successfully qualifying for the World Cup. They were also excluded from the 2014 Asian Cup .
North Korea was allowed to participate in the qualification for the Olympic Games in 2012 and was able to qualify. There the team met France for the first time in the group stage , as well as the USA and Colombia , against which North Korea already played at the 2011 World Cup. The first game on July 25, 2012 at the London Olympics was delayed by an hour and 15 minutes. The North Korean officials boycotted the game because the South Korean flag was hoisted instead of the North Korean flag and it was also displayed on the screen when the players were introduced. The North Koreans won the game 2-0, but lost the other two games, conceding the highest defeat in their international history against France with 5-0. As the worst third in the group, North Korea was eliminated after the preliminary round. As a result , North Korea fell from the top 10 to 11th place in the FIFA World Ranking .
Youth teams
The U-20 team celebrated the greatest success on an international level, at the 2006 World Cup in Russia they defeated the teams from Germany, France, Brazil and in the final China and won the world championship title. The U-17 selection was able to assert itself in the final against the USA at the 2008 World Cup in New Zealand and also win this World Cup. The U-20 team was runner-up in the same year . In 2016 North Korea won both the U-17 and the U-20 World Cup .
