The tournaments

Olympia 1996 in Atlanta

For the first football tournament at the 1996 Games , apart from the host, only the 7 best teams from the 1995 World Cup or Brazil were qualified instead of the English women who were not eligible to start. Since North Korea did not take part in the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima , where the Asian teams could qualify for the World Cup, the team had no chance to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Olympia 2000 in Sydney

Since only the 7 best teams from the 1999 World Cup were qualified for the second Olympic tournament and North Korea was eliminated in the group phase, the team could not qualify.

Olympia 2004 in Athens

The North Koreans were also unable to qualify for the third Olympic women's football tournament. As third in a qualifying tournament that was held in Japan in April 2004 , they missed the qualification. They first defeated the Republic of China (Taiwan) 5-0, Hong Kong 9-0 and then Singapore 8-0 in the group stage . A 0: 3 in the semifinals against Japan then missed the qualification. The game for 3rd place, which is no longer decisive for qualification, was won 3-0 against South Korea .

2008 Olympics in Beijing

For the tournament in Beijing , the North Koreans had to qualify in games against Australia as well as Hong Kong and the Republic of China (Taiwan), which were played in two-legged matches in an everyone-versus-everyone mode. North Korea won all six games, scored 51 goals, conceded no goal and qualified as group winners. Only in the games against Australia did the results remain within the usual range with 2-0.

At the Olympic tournament they met Nigeria in their first game and won 1-0. Then they lost against vice world champions Brazil with 1: 2, whereby they were already behind with 0: 2 after 22 minutes and the correction of the result only succeeded in the fourth minute of stoppage time. They kept the 0-0 against world champions Germany for 85 minutes, then Anja Mittag , who came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute, scored the winning goal for the world champions. North Korea was eliminated as the worst third party in the group.

Olympia 2012 in London

Although North Korea was banned from the next World Cup after the doping incidents at the 2011 World Cup, they were allowed to participate in the qualification for the Olympic Games. The final Asian qualification tournament took place in the People's Republic of China . They won against Australia, South Korea and Thailand . Only one point each was given against China and Japan and thus occupied the second place that was sufficient for qualification.

At the games in the United Kingdom , they first met newcomer Colombia and won 2-0. The South Korean flag was accidentally shown on the video wall during the team presentation, whereupon the North Korean players left the pitch. Only after an apology from the Olympic organizers was the game able to start one hour late. The correct flag was immediately shown against France , but the game was lost 5-0, with Frenchwoman Élodie Thomis scoring the 250th women's Olympic goal. With a subsequent 0-1 win against defending champions USA , North Korea was eliminated as the worst third party in the group, as it was four years earlier. Choe Mi-gyong received a yellow card 13 minutes after being substituted on and the yellow-red card five minutes later .

Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro

The two best teams qualify for the tournament in Rio de Janeiro at a tournament in Osaka, Japan . Opponents at the tournament that started on February 29, 2016 are Australia, the People's Republic of China , Japan, South Korea and Vietnam . North Korea started the tournament with two 1-1 draws. After a win against Vietnam, however, they lost to Australia and therefore missed qualification on the penultimate matchday.

Games

North Korea has played six games at the Olympic Games so far. Of these, two were won and four lost. No game went into overtime. The North Koreans never played against the hosts, but once against the defending champion, who then also became Olympic champion (2012 in the preliminary round). All games are unique. Two games were the first, one of which was the only one against the respective opponent so far.

North Korea has so far played against teams from all other confederations except Oceania, but only against the Africa and European champions (once each). The latter was also the reigning world champion.

Most of the games were played by 24 players who were each used in three games. So far, no North Korean has participated in two tournaments. Only Ri Un-hyang and Song Jong-sun from the 2008 squad were still banned for doping at the 2011 World Cup at the time of the Olympic Games in London. Seven players from the 2011 World Cup squad were then also in the 2012 squad for the Olympic Games. The top scorer so far is Kim Song-hui with two goals against Colombia.
