The tournaments

Olympia 1996 in Atlanta

For the first women's Olympic soccer tournament, in addition to hosts USA, only the other seven best teams from the 1995 World Cup and Brazil qualified for the English women who were not eligible to start. Since Mexico only finished third in the 1994 CONCACAF Women's Championship , which served as World Cup qualification, and thus missed the World Cup, the team was not qualified for the Olympic Games.

Olympia 2000 in Sydney

In addition to the host, only the seven best teams from the 1999 World Cup were qualified for the second Olympic tournament . Leonardo Cuéllar , who has been coach of the Mexicans since 1998, led his team to the World Cup by winning the intercontinental playoffs against Argentina , but Mexico was eliminated in the preliminary round. a. lost 6-0 to Germany , the team was not qualified for the Olympic Games this time either.

Olympia 2004 in Athens

For the third Olympic women's football tournament, the continental associations were each allocated starting places, which they then awarded in individual qualifications. The Mexicans first had to play against Nicaragua and the hosts in a tournament in Honduras and won the two games 8-0 and 6-0, with Maribel Domínguez alone scoring six goals. At the final tournament in Costa Rica they won against Haiti 5-0 and Trinidad & Tobago 8-1, but then lost against the USA 0-2. In the semifinals, they then met Canadians and were able to qualify for the Olympic Games with a 2-1 win. They lost the final, which was no longer important for the qualification, 2: 3 against the USA . In both finals, Domínguez was Mexico's sole goalscorer. In total, she scored 14 goals in qualifying.

At the tournament in Greece , Domínguez scored the opening goal in the 11th minute in the first game against the People's Republic of China , which the Chinese were able to equalize in the 34th minute, but could not add another goal. After a 2-0 win against world champions Germany, against whom they had lost 6-0 at the World Cup five years earlier , they were qualified as second in the group for the first-ever quarter-finals because China had lost 8-0 to the Germans. Here they were defeated by Brazil 0: 5, but they also conceded fewer goals than in two previous games.

2008 Olympics in Beijing

For the tournament in Beijing , the Mexicans had to play against Jamaica and then again against the USA in the final tournament in Mexico . With 8: 1 and 1: 3 they reached the semi-finals. Like four years before, they faced Canada, but this time lost 1-0 and were therefore not qualified for the Olympic football tournament. In the game for 3rd place, which is no longer important for the qualification, they then won 1-0 against Costa Rica .

Olympia 2012 in London

For the tournament in London , the Mexicans had to play qualifying games again. The tournament in Canada won the group stage against Guatemala (5-0) and the Dominican Republic (7-0), while the USA lost 4-0. In the semi-finals, Canada was the opponent again and they lost again, this time with 1: 3 and the participation in the Olympic football tournament was missed again. There was no game for 3rd place this time.

Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro

For the tournament in Rio de Janeiro , Mexico had to play qualifying games at a tournament in the USA in February 2016. First Puerto Rico was defeated 5-0 and then only just lost 0-1 against the USA. In the last group game against Costa Rica a draw would have been enough to reach the semi-finals. Costa Rica took the lead after ten minutes and was able to extend the lead with a converted penalty in the 57th minute. Domínguez then only managed the connection goal. Mexico was eliminated in the group stage.

Olympia 2020 in Tokyo

For the tournament in Japan , Mexico had to play qualifying games at a tournament in the USA in late January / early February 2020. First, Jamaica were defeated 1-0 and St. Kitts and Nevis 6-0, thus securing a place in the semi-finals. With a 2-0 defeat against Canada it was only enough for second place, so that they met world champions USA in the semi-finals, against whom they lost 4-0 and thus missed the tournament in Japan.
