The tournaments
Olympia 1996 in Atlanta
The Brazilians were able to take part in the first Olympic tournament to which the eight best teams from the 1995 World Cup were invited because England, as one of these teams without its own Olympic Committee, was not allowed to start and Brazil was invited to do so. In preparation, the Brazilians played only one test match under new national coach José Duarte , which they won 2-1 against Canada and started the tournament with a 2-2 win against world champions Norway , with Pretinha equalizing one minute before the end of the game. Then they won 2-0 against Japan and achieved a 1-1 draw against runner-up world champions Germany , which eliminated Germany and made it into the semi-finals as second in the group. There they were defeated by the People's Republic of China 2: 3 with a goal in the final minute. In the match for bronze they met again against group opponents Norway, but this time lost 2-0. With this game, Duarte's first term ended. With four goals, Pretinha was the top scorer of the tournament together with the two Norwegians Ann Kristin Aarønes and Linda Medalen .
Olympia 2000 in Sydney
For the second Olympic tournament, the Brazilians qualified as one of the seven best teams in the 1999 World Cup. Duarte took over the national team for the third time in June 2000 and reached the final against the USA with the team as a guest at the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000 , but lost it. In the first game at the Olympic tournament they met Sweden and won 2-0. After a 1: 2 defeat against Germany they had to win against hosts Australia in the last game, which made them 0: 1 deficit with goals from Raquel and Kátia . As runners-up in the group, they met defending champions USA in the semi-finals and lost 1-0. In the match for bronze they met again against group opponents Germany, this time even lost with 0: 2.
Olympia 2004 in Athens
The Brazilians were also qualified again for the third Olympic women's football tournament. In April 2004 Renê Simões had taken over the team and prepared for the tournament in friendly matches against American university and Swedish and Norwegian club teams and an international game that was lost 1: 5 against the USA. In the only group of four, they first met Australia and won 1-0 with a goal from Marta . But then they lost 2-0 to the USA even though they were the better team for 45 minutes. With a 7-0 win against Greece, with Cristiane scoring three goals, they qualified as second in the group for the first-ever quarter-finals. Here they continued scoring in the 5-0 win against Mexico. They then had more trouble in the semifinals against vice world champions Sweden and it took until the 64th minute before Pretinha scored the 1-0 victory. This was the first time they were in the final and again faced group opponents USA. Here it was again Pretinha who equalized the USA's 1-0 lead, but since neither team managed to score another goal in 90 minutes, it was overtime and the USA again had luck on their side and won with 2: 1 her second gold medal. With the final, the term of office of Simões ended. With four goals each, Cristiane and the German Birgit Prinz were the top goal scorers of the tournament.
2008 Olympics in Beijing
For the tournament in Beijing , the 2006 South American Women's Soccer Championship was considered a qualifying tournament, and the South American champions qualified for Beijing. Before the championship, Jorge Luiz Barcellos took over the position of national coach. Since Brazil surprisingly lost the last game against Argentina 2-0 in the final round, Argentina qualified directly. Brazil was able to qualify through a playoff game against the second in the Africa qualification, the team from Ghana. The play-off took place in Beijing and Brazil won 5-1.
At the beginning of the tournament, the final of the 2007 World Cup against world champions Germany was repeated, but this time neither of them could score a goal. With a 2-1 win against North Korea and a 3-1 win against Nigeria, in which Cristiane managed a "flawless hat trick ", Brazil won the group. Cristiane is the only player to score three goals in two games. They then won 2-1 against Norway in the quarter-finals and then faced Germany again in the semi-finals. The German team took the lead in the 10th minute through Birgit Prinz, but Brazil were able to equalize with Formiga two minutes before the half-time break . In the second half, the world champion was countered several times and the Brazilians were able to win 4-1 for the first time against Germany and thus take revenge for the final defeat at the World Cup. In the final, like four years before, the USA was the opponent and this time the decision had to be made in extra time, but this time after 90 minutes without a goal. And again the Americans had the better end for themselves and defended their title. Barcellos then retired as national coach, but was again national coach after the disappointing 2011 World Cup and the subsequent defeat in the final of the 2011 Pan American Games. With five goals, Cristiane was the tournament's top scorer.
Olympia 2012 in London
As four years before, the South American Football Championship was again considered a qualifying tournament, and this time Brazil was able to win the tournament again and qualify for London. There they met Cameroon, which had qualified for the first time for an intercontinental tournament for women, and won 5-0. Cristiane scored her 11th goal at the Olympic Games with the 4-0 goal and thus became the sole record holder (previously together with Birgit Prinz). They then had more trouble with New Zealand, which they defeated 1-0 with a goal from Cristiane, who improved her record to twelve goals. With that, Brazil qualified for the quarter-finals, and in the last game against Team GB , which was composed of English and a few Scottish players especially for this tournament, it was all about winning the group. In front of 70,584 spectators at Wembley Stadium , the highest number of spectators at a game by a British women's team, the Brazilians lost 1-0, with the goal falling in the second minute. In the quarter-finals they then met world champions Japan and lost 2-0, which meant that the tournament for Brazil was ended for the first time before the semi-finals and Barcellos' second term ended.
Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro
Brazil was automatically qualified as host for the tournament in Rio de Janeiro , but it would also have qualified as South American champions in 2014 . The Brazilians, together with world champions USA and European champions Germany, were placed in pot 1 for the draw, so that they could not meet these two teams in the group stage. Opponents in the preliminary round were China , Sweden and South Africa . Brazil started the tournament with a 3-0 win against China and a 5-1 win against Sweden and then spared some players against South Africa. Despite the goalless draw, Brazil qualified as group winners for the quarter-finals. Here it came to revenge for the last 16 defeat at the 2015 World Cup against Australia. However, the Brazilians needed the penalty shoot-out to reach the semi-finals after a goalless 120 minutes, where they met the Swedes again, who for their part had eliminated defending champions USA on penalties. The semi-finals were also goalless, but this time the Brazilians lost on penalties. In the game for the bronze medal they then lost to Canada 1: 2
Olympia 2020 in Tokyo
As before, the South American Football Championship was again considered a qualifying tournament, and Brazil was able to win the tournament again and qualify for Tokyo. The Brazilians won all seven games with a total goal difference of 31-2 and qualified as the first team after hosts Japan.
