The tournaments

Olympia 1996 in Atlanta

For the first football tournament at the 1996 Games , apart from the host, only the seven best teams from the 1995 World Cup and Brazil were qualified instead of the English women who were not eligible to start. Since New Zealand did not qualify for the World Cup, the team had no chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games.

Olympia 2000 in Sydney

Since only the seven best teams from the 1999 World Cup were qualified for the second Olympic tournament and New Zealand had not qualified for the World Cup, the team was unable to qualify.

Olympia 2004 in Athens

For the third Olympic women's football tournament, the continental federations had been allocated starting places and New Zealand now had the chance to qualify at the Oceanic qualifying tournament, which was held in Fiji in March 2004 . New Zealand withdrew its team to take part in the 6th Australia Cup 2004. The 3rd Women's Olympic Football Tournament took place without New Zealand.

2008 Olympics in Beijing

For the tournament in Beijing , the New Zealanders no longer had to deal with the Australians in the oceanic qualification, as Australia had switched to the Asian association . To qualify, New Zealand only had to play one game against the winner of the 2007 South Pacific Games , and won it 2-0 against Papua New Guinea .

At the Olympic tournament they met Japan in the first game and achieved a 2-2. But then they lost against Norway with 0: 1 and defending champions USA with 0: 4, which meant they were eliminated as the bottom of the group.

Olympia 2012 in London

After leaving the 2011 World Cup in the preliminary round, coach John Herdman switched to the Canadian association as national coach . His successor was his previous assistant Tony Readings , who had previously won the 2010 Oceania Women's U-20 Football Championship with the U-20 team .

For the games in London, the New Zealanders had to qualify again against Papua New Guinea, which had prevailed against Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu for the playoffs against New Zealand. With 8: 0 and 7: 0, they qualified for the Olympic Games without any problems.

At the games in the UK they lost 1-0 to the hosts and Brazil, but then won 3-1 against newcomer Cameroon. As a result, they qualified for the knockout round as the second-best third party in the group and met defending champions USA. With 0: 2, the defeat was not as high as four years earlier.

Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro

For the tournament in Rio de Janeiro , the New Zealanders again qualified against Papua New Guinea, which after losing the home game 7-1, did not play for the second leg in New Zealand. Opponents in Brazil were France and Colombia and, for the third time, the USA . The New Zealanders started with a 0-2 defeat against the USA, then won against Colombia 1-0. A 3-0 defeat against France made them third in the group, but only had 3 points, while two other thirds in the group got four points, eliminating New Zealand.

Olympia 2020 in Tokyo

For the tournament in Tokyo , the New Zealanders qualified at the 2018 Oceania Women's Soccer Championship , which this time also served as qualification for the 2019 World Cup and the 2020 Olympic Games. New Zealand won all five games without conceding a goal and scoring 43 goals.

The New Zealanders played most often against the USA (3 times), twice as the last and once as the first game. Two games were the first and only against the respective opponents.
