Peter Rentsch (historian, June 1937)

Peter Rentsch (born June 6, 1937 in Glauchau ; † June 3, 2014 ) was a German historian and museum director.

Life

Rentsch first learned the job of a chemical specialist. After three years of training at the technical college for local museums in Weißenfels , he worked as an assistant at the Zwickau Museum from 1959 to 1961 under the then director Marianne Vater. However, in 1962 he decided to become a teacher. He obtained his qualification as a specialist history teacher with a degree in historian at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1967 with the thesis “Location factors of capitalist industry with regard to urban development in Zwickau”. He then worked at various schools in Zwickau such as the Dittes Oberschule, the Extended Oberschule "Gerhart Hauptmann" and the Ziolkowski Oberschule. At the same time, he was involved in the field of popular education for 10 years in the position of specialist history consultant in the city of Zwickau.

From April 1, 1986 to April 20, 1989 he was director of the Zwickau Municipal Museum . He became known through research and publications on regional problems of class constitution of the bourgeoisie and the proletariat.

After 1990 he devoted himself increasingly to the local history in the vicinity of his hometown Glauchau and to everyday school life in Saxony. He was also active in the Glauchau Monument Association.
